our volunteers

I decided to volunteer for the community meals because I love cooking and meeting new people so it only made sense! I had been going regularly to the cafe prior to volunteering for the Saturday meals; it’s such an important place in town. To me it is a sanctuary, especially coming from abroad and looking to get to know people here. There’s something about the environment, it’s a very accepting place with a relaxed feel.

The chef and owner (Kate) has created an environment that is friendly, playful and pleasant to be in. The conversations and connections made with the other volunteers while preparing the meal are a reason to keep coming back. The food also turns out to be excellent every single time. I started volunteering for the community meals once a month, and now I volunteer at the cafe every week!
Through volunteering at Down to Earth I have learned to cook differently at home (less waste!) Also the connections made with the fellow volunteers as well as the regular people coming in for the community meals have made a positive experience in my life. Sometimes I recognize someone (because of this initiative) out and about so it makes me feel part of a larger community.

I would 10000000000% recommend it to others!
